Junior Archaeologist

Sources Archaeological & Research Inc is seeking to fill an entry-level position for a junior archaeologist. The position will involve assisting with fieldwork (forestry and municipal), office (reporting, mapping, GIS), and lab work. The exact balance of these tasks will change week to week, month to month etc, with mentoring provided as necessary. The position is based in Vancouver, B.C. All of Sources’ projects are carried out with full First Nation support, the fieldwork carried out with the full involvement of local First Nation archaeological assistants.

Requirements:

  • Respectful and engaged sensitivities for working with First Nation Heritage and Cultural Sites.
  • BA/B.Sc. or currently enrolled in at least the third year of an undergraduate program (Archaeology or Anthropology), or greater.
  • Familiarity with British Columbia coastal archaeology and the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA).
  • Ability to learn quickly, work quickly, be an enthusiastic part of a team, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Applicant must be physically fit and willing to work outside in adverse weather conditions, both remotely and locally.
  • Hold a Class 5 BC Driver’s licence and Level 1 First Aid.
  • Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software (i.e. MS Word, Excel, etc).
  • Archaeological excavation experience is an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with Sources team members to carry out municipal archaeological fieldwork (in Metro Vancouver) and forestry surveys (out of town, sometimes in remote locations).
  • Complete reports, site forms, and other permit and project deliverables.
  • Post-fieldwork note digitizing and map preparation.
  • Assist with project co-ordination, management, and planning.
  • BC Archaeological Site Inventory Form completion.
  • Laboratory: Artifact and fauna etc. identification, bagging, cataloguing, and organizing.
  • Detailed note taking and mapping.
  • Archaeological mapping, profile drawing and photographing.
  • Be open to mentoring in, and using, all software pertinent to archaeological consulting (Office, Adobe CS, GIS, etc)

Senior Archaeologist

Sources Archaeological & Research Inc (Sources) is seeking an archaeologist experienced with both (a) Coastal Forestry Archaeological Survey and (b) Municipal Archaeological projects. The successful candidate is expected to have Field Director status, or be well along the path to becoming a Field Director, and to have experience working independently. This full-time position is based in Vancouver, B.C., with responsibilities divided between both office and field duties.  All of Sources projects are carried out with full First Nation support, the fieldwork carried out with the full involvement and participation of local First Nation archaeological technicians, without exception.  This position is appropriate for those applicants who want to work in a smaller, hands-on firm that operates closely with coastal First Nation communities.

Requirements:

  • Respectful and engaged sensitivities for working with First Nation Communities, and their concerns with Heritage and Cultural Sites.
  • BA/B.Sc. (Archaeology or Anthropology), or greater.
  • Proven familiarity with British Columbia coastal archaeology, First Nation permitting systems, and the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act (HCA RSBC 1996, Chapter 187).
  • Ability to learn quickly, work expediently, be an enthusiastic part of a team, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Applicant must be physically fit and willing to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Hold a Class 5 BC Driver’s licence.
  • Familarity with word processing and spreadsheet software (i.e. MS Word, Excel, etc).
  • Possess skills in archaeological survey and excavation.

  • Moderate to high level management and co-management (planning, conducting, and etc.) of Municipal archaeological projects. Including First Nation and Client consultation, permitting, and project strategizing and scoping.
  • Field participation in Forestry projects, including base-level assistance with planning.
  • Preparation of fieldwork background packages (maps, archaeological/ethnographic background, etc.).
  • Post-field note digitizing and map preparation, etc.
  • Report writing and mapping to current B.C. Archaeology Branch standards and requirements.
  • BC Archaeological Site Inventory Form completion and submission.
  • Preparation and maintenance of field gear.
  • Working with Sources team members to complete reports, site forms, and other permit and project deliverables.
  • A working familiarity with the B.C. Forest Safety Council (BCFSC) policies and requirements

Field Director—Forestry Division

Sources Archaeological & Research Inc. is seeking a B.C. archaeologist with Coastal ‘Field Director’ status (as certified by the B.C. Archaeology Branch). The position is based in Vancouver, B.C., with responsibilities divided between office and field duties. All Sources projects are conducted with full First Nation support, with fieldwork carried out with the full involvement of local First Nation archaeological assistants.

Requirements:

  • Certified Coastal Field Director (as recognized by the BC Archaeology Branch).
  • Respectful and engaged sensitivities for working in and with First Nation Communities, and with Heritage and Cultural Sites etc.
  • Ability to supervise, and mentor as required, field crews in a sensitive and co-operative manner.
  • Completed a BA degree (at minimum) in (Archaeology or Anthropology, or the equivalent).
  • Familiarity with British Columbia coastal archaeology and the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA 1996, Chapter 187).
  • Demonstrated experience in Northwest Coast archaeology and prehistory, including CMT identification, forestry survey and orienteering, subsurface testing, and artifact/fauna identification and data analysis experience.
  • Ability to learn quickly, work quickly, be an enthusiastic part of a team, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Applicant must be physically fit and willing to work outside in adverse weather conditions of the NWC.
  • Hold a Class 5 BC Driver’s licence and Level 1 First Aid.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in professional CRM report writing and mapping (GIS programmes and/or Adobe Illustrator) to the standards set by the BC Archaeology Branch.

Responsibilities:

  • Directing Forestry and other related archaeological field surveys, taking thorough and clear notes, and mapping survey areas, test locations, and archaeological sites etc.
  • Independent or co-operative pre-field planning of all aspects of forestry surveys and shifts, including First Nation and client consultation.
  • Preparation of fieldwork background packages (maps, archaeological/ethnographic background, etc.) and gear.
  • Post-field note digitizing and map preparation etc.
  • Report writing and mapping to HCA standards.
